The project director will be based at the VA Greater Los Angeles Center of Excellence for the study of Health Care Provider Behavior (COE). The COE, established in 1993, has a large interdisciplinary research staff with over $10 million in health services research funding. Consistent with its mission to promote better healthcare and to design systems that improve care, the COE has been funded to conduct a large two-year multi-site study that aims to improve nursing home assessment and reporting. Project Background: One of the most vulnerable populations in the US healthcare system is the population that resides in nursing homes and improving the quality of nursing home (NH) care is a particularly important and challenging task. The Minimum Data Set (MDS) is a standardized resident assessment tool that is meant to improve resident quality of life by guiding NHs in assessing residents for significant problems such as mood disorders, functional disability and sensory impairment. Items also address discomfort, preferences and advanced care planning. It must be completed on every NH resident in Medicare certified facilities and in VA NHs. Over 10 million MDS assessments are submitted annually. The current research effort will improve and validate key sections of the MDS. The COE is the lead research team on this collaborative research with other VAs nationally and Harvard Department of Health Policy. This project coordinates with a contract between RAND and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to revise the MDS. The VA research project will be integrated in this revision and thus have almost immediate applications. Job Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a PhD with significant analytic or health services project experience, or a Masters degree with at least two years experience as a project director on multi-site health-related research projects. Candidates must have demonstrated skill in working effectively as a team member/leader and have basic familiarity with research designs involving primary patient data collection and secondary analysis. Job Description: The fulltime Project Director will be based at the Sepulveda campus of the COE. The Project Director will be considered a co-investigator who is directly involved in all aspects of the study and is responsible for its day-to-day scientific and administrative operations. The Project Director will be involved in research design, data collection, data analysis and the preparation of reports. Specifically, the Project Director will work with the study’s PI and Survey Director to monitor pilot testing, integrate site activities and develop validation protocols and data collection instruments. The project director will also work in consultation with the COE IRB coordinator to implement and track data privacy protections. He/she will work closely with the PI in providing support for the activities of the analytic team. The Project Director, with the support of COE staff, will also be responsible for budget monitoring, and managing staff resources.
